Mr Charles Smith
Head of Primary
Mr Charles Smith graduated from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, California with a degree in Education. He then earned his teaching license, and began teaching fourth grade stuedents at Westside Neighborhood School in Los Angeles where he learned to co-teach in a progressive learning environment.
Mr Smith later moved to San Francisco, California and taught both fourth and fifth grade students. He strengthened his ability to differentiate instruction, and tto each whole children by developing both academic skills and social-emotional strengths in his students.
He has a passion for traveling and learning about different cultures, so he can share his experiences with his students. This passion lead him to move to China in 2017, and he is now in his fourteenth year of teaching and fourth year of teaching at Yew Wah.
Ms Charlotte Wu
Head of Primary
Ms Charlotte Wu graduated from Fuling Normal University of Chongqing in English. She then studied in Southwest University and graduated with a bachelor's degree in Chinese Literacy. She has been studying a MPA (Master of Public Affairs) degree from Southwest University since 2018.
Ms Wu has been teaching CAL (Chinese as an additional language), CFL (Chinese as first language), Secondary Chinese and IGCSE CAL in YCIS Chonqing since 2005. She has been awarded the High Potential Teacher for many years in a row and has served in leadership positions, such as Chinese Subject Leader, Head of Chinese Language and Co-head of Primary since 2011.
Ms Kareen Martinez
Ms Kareen Martinez was born and educated in the United States. She holds a master’s degree in Elementary Education from the University of Phoenix and a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Central Florida. She is in her 13th year of teaching primary students and has taught students from Year 1 to Year 5. For the past 4 years, she has taught English, Maths and Science in the Middle East, which she states it was an incredible experience and she has learned as much from her students as they did from her.
Ms Martinez has served in many educational positions in leadership such as the Curriculum Co-ordinator for Science for 6 years, and the Curriculum Co-ordinator for English for 2 years. In 2012, she was selected as Teacher of the Year.
Ms Ivy Peng
Chinese & Theme Leader
Ms Ivy Peng graduated from Sun-Yatsen University with a master's degree. She worked in a middle school affiliated to China Southern Normal University as a Chinese language teacher. She joined YWIES Guangzhou and taught Chinese in Primary section for four years, meanwhile, took up some management roles. She went to the United States afterwards to teach the Chinese immersion programme. Now, she is pleased to return to China and continue to serve YWIES Guangzhou.
Ms Peng believes that 'education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.' She pays attention to students' interest and strengths, and guides them according to the situation. At the same time, she also emphasises the basic literacy of language and literature.
In her spare time, Ms Peng tries her best to enjoy a peaceful and loving family life. She also enjoys hiking, painting, and reading.
Ms Sophia Androu-Erriah
Theme (STEM) Leader
Ms Sophia Androu-Erriah was born and educated in London. She graduated from the University of Birmingham with a Bachelor of Sciences in Psychology and the University College London (UCL-Birkbeck College) with a master's degree (MSc) in Cognitive Neuroscience and Neuropsychology. She began her career in neuropsychological research at the Royal Free Hospital, London but then chose a different path due to her love for working with children. She then went on to be trained as a teacher and gained her PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Primary Education with Science).
Since then, Ms Androu-Erriah has worked in various schools in London, mainland Africa and Mauritius. She has worked with all grade levels from Year 1 to Year 6, as well as, with those studying for A Level qualifications. She has worked with various early childhood education institutes and primary schools as the ""Letters and Sounds"" (a phonic programme) curriculum trainer and an advisor in Mauritius. She has also organised and led the Young Scientist Film Award for COBIS (Council of British International Schools) of which her school came 3rd.
Mr Alastair Frost
PE & Sports Leader
Mr Alastair Frost spent his life in Kuwait, Dubai, England and New Zealand. However, most of his education was completed in England and New Zealand. He has been heavily involved in sports and specifically in football where he has played in both the New Zealand and Taiwanese National Leagues. He was also very active in coaching and subsequently teaching since graduating from Waikato University with a Bachelor of Teaching degree and a New Zealand Football National Academy Coaching Licence. He has primarily been teaching and coaching in South Korea and Taiwan schools and universities before embarking on furthering his teaching career here in YWIES Guangzhou.
Mr Frost is the PE & Sports Leader and is currently teaching Year 2 through to Year 6 while also taking football during the Co-curricular Activies session.
Ms Danielle Whitlock
Ms Danielle Whitlock graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Grace College in 2013. She has 5 years of teaching experience in the United States. She has been working as a Primary Teacher at YWIES Guangzhou since 2017.
Ms Whitlock is very patient with her students and can teach them according to their different personalities and learning abilities.
Ms Kandice Griffin
Ms Kandice Griffin is from America and was born and raised in Monticello, Florida. She attended Bethune Cookman University to attain her Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education with English to Speakers of Other Languages Endorsement. She began her teaching career in 2011 in Daytona Beach, Florida, teaching Year 2 all subjects. She later taught at Rymfire Elementary in Palm Coast, teaching Year 2 as well. Eventually, she relocated to Tampa and taught Year 2 and Year 3 for 5 years. For the last two years, she was the grade level chair. In this role she has analyzed data to drive instruction, implemented interventions to reach differentiated levels of learning, planned and collaborated with tiered grade levels to create effective lesson plans. This is her 3rd year here at YWIES Guangzhou where she teaches Year 1.
Ms Cherry Cheng
Chinese & Theme Teacher
Ms Cherry Cheng was born and educated in Sichuan province. She graduated from Xihua University majoring in Japanese, and because of her love for kids and the education industry, she gained the Certificate for Teaching Chinese as a foreign language and Primary Chinese language. After graduation, she worked as a Chinese teacher in an international school in Thailand. She joined YWIES Guangzhou in 2014. She has more than 6 years of working experience in the education field.
As a primary teacher, she cares deeply for each student, providing a safe and happy environment with clear rules and expectations. She shows true empathy with her students, offering help and encouragement when they need it, which develops a deep trust with them. She has high expectations and adopts a holistic approach, aiming to cultivate students' behaviour and learning habits.
Mr Kevin Lawson
Mr Kevin Lawson was born and raised in America. He grew up in San Francisco, California. He has been teaching for eight years and married Kandice who is also from America last year. He is very energetic, passionate, yet stern. He attended Bethune-Cookman University and received a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Elementary Education. He accepted his first teaching job in 2010 at Westside Elementary in Daytona Beach, Florida. He taught third and second grades for four years before moving to Tampa in 2014. He taught at Kimbell Elementary and was a third and fifth grade teacher. He has earned several highly effective ratings throughout his teaching career and was nominated Teacher of the Year. He strongly believes that every student can achieve their own sccess with a tailored lesson.
Ms Berlin Li
Chinese & Theme Teacher
Ms Berlin Li graduated from Sun Yat-sen University with a bachelor's degree in English and minor in Japanese. She has also got her master's degree in Teaching Chinese as Second Language from the School of Foreign Languages.
Ms Li focused on studying Teaching Chinese as Foreign Language, Modern Chinese and Chinese Language Acquisition. She has worked at American International School of Guangzhou as a Chinese teacher. It is her 5th year in YWIES Guangzhou and she is very happy to become part of the community.
Ms Tania Courtis
Ms Tania Courtis was born and educated in South Africa. She graduated from the University of South Africa with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and in 2017 she completed her Honours Degree in Inclusive Education.
Ms Courtis has been teaching for over 20 years. She has taught in fields like Early Childhood Education, Special Educational Needs and Years 1-4. She joined YWIES Guangzhou in August 2014, being part of the original team who came to Guangzhou to open the campus.
Ms Courtis enjoys reading, playing piano and spending time with her two children who live with her in Guangzhou.
Ms Sandy Li
Chinese & Theme Teacher
Ms Sandy Li received her Bachelor Degree in Education (Chinese) in 2013. She has been engaged in Chinese teaching in primary schools for 7 years. She is particularly experienced at phonetic and Chinese character. She has been awarded the Excellent Form Teacher, Excellent Teacher and Advanced Education Worker. She is also good at inspiring students learning initiative in both intellectual and emotional aspects. In addition, she pays attention to the training of habits of Chinese reading and focuses on improving the students' ability of reading and writing.
Ms Precelene Matthew
Ms Precelene Matthew is an experienced, passionate and focused teacher who is committed to giving children the best possible education. She has a passion for education and takes pride in her students achievements .
In 2014 Ms Matthew graduated from the University of South Africa with a Bachelor's Degree in Education in the Intermediate and Senior Phase. She has gained more than 8 years of teaching experience, having taught for 2 years in South Africa and has just completed her 5th school year in the United Arab Emirates. In these 5 years she has also had the role of being the Head of Student Council and Head of Moral Education.
Being in the UAE has allowed Ms Matthew to not only witness, but also become a part of the education reform of a growing country thus enabling her to become familiar with a variety of approaches in teaching. She has had the the privilege of working with student from a range of different cultures and nationalities, gaining extensive experience in her career.
Ms Candice Lian
Chinese & Theme Teacher
Ms Candice Lian has 6 years of teaching experience since she graduated in 2013. She focuses on the cultivation of students' Chinese language competency and reading habits, and insists on grasping the sustainable development opportunities of students' comprehensive language ability under the National Curriculum System.
Ms Lian is a life long learner, and in order to improve her teaching skills, she participated in the training ""Interpretation of Chinese textbooks under the new curriculum reform"", ""Cultivation of critical thinking in the classroom"" and ""Implementation of IB PYP in the classroom"". She is also specialised in evoking the proactive side of students on learning and emotional levels.
Ms Jessica Odendaal
Ms Jessica Odendaal is an ECE and primary teacher. She was born and raised in South Africa. At school, her favourite subjects were English and Sciences. She attended the University of Cape Town where she completed her Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in Microbiology and Genetics. She then completed her honours degree with distinction in Molecular and Cell Biology. Despite her love of science, she felt that teaching was her true passion. While studying for her certification in early childhood education, with an emphasis on education in the 21st century, she worked in the residence hall looking after Year 1-3 girls as well as teaching Physical Education. She has since taught at both the ECE and primary level. She believes in holistic education and strives to make learning as meaningful and enjoyable as possible for her students. She values having strong, positive relationships with her students.
Mr Ciaran McMullan
Mr Ciaran McMullan graduated as an outstanding practitioner with a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (Primary) from St Mary’s University, London. He has taught for several years in Hong Kong, London and now, Guangzhou. Whilst in London, he educated both ESL (English as a Second Language) and native Year 2 children in preparation for the English National Curriculum SATS examination with a high success rate. During that time he was also the Music Co-ordinator for the school.
Prior to becoming a graduate in Education, Mr McMullan received a first-class honours degree in Music Technology Specialist (B.A.) from London College of Music, University of West London; a First Diploma in Audio Engineering from the School of Audio Engineering, London; and a Diploma in Performing Arts (Music) in his home country, Northern Ireland.
Mr Stuart Stephens
Mr Stuart Stephens was born and educated in England. He initially worked in the finance industry where, as a trainer, he developed a love of education and lifelong learning. After teaching in sixth form colleges in the south of England for a number of years he took up his first international teaching position in The Bahamas. He subsequently moved to Vietnam in 2001 and has been in Asia ever since. He first came to China in 2010. He has worked with a variety of curriculums and has considerable experience of Primary ICT through to A Level and IB. During the last few years he was instrumental in setting up the ICT curriculum in 2 new schools, Dulwich College Zhuhai and Epsom College Malaysia where he was the Director of ICT.
In his spare time, Mr Stephens enjoys spending time with his family and travelling through South East Asia. He is a keen cook and specialisies in Asian food. He also enjoys golf and swimming and is a qualified cricket coach from Sussex County Cricket Club.
Ms Tiantian Xie
Ms Tiantian Xie graduated from University College London (UCL) with a master's degree in Applied Linguistics. She began her teaching career as a Primary Years Programme homeroom teacher in an IB international school, teaching Unit of Inquiry, Mathematics and English. She encourages her students to always be inquirers and to think critically.
Ms Xie loves kids, and she believes that every child has his or her own potential in learning. She is dedicated in teaching and focuses on promoting the learner profile of her students. Her teaching experience excelled herself in making connections with students and their parents.
Ms Xie is an outgoing, creative, risk-taking, lovely and cool person. She also has many hobbies, like singing, dancing, hosting, reading, traveling, taking photos and editing video.
Ms Mandy Yao
Librarian & Chinese Teacher
Ms Mandy Yao graduated from Zhaoqing College with a bachelor's degree in Chinese Language and Literature. After graduating, she studied in Beijing for a comprehensive knowledge of Japanese Shita-do Right Brain Education. She also actively participated in education and teaching related training.
Ms Yao has nearly 10 years of teaching experience and has constantly been engaged in language teaching. In 2014, she joined YWIES Guangzhou as one of the first teachers and worked as a primary school language teacher. She has unique insights in Chinese language teaching and has a deep understanding of the learning needs and characteristics of students. She pays attention to the development of students' comprehensive ability of listening, speaking, reading and writing. She often encourages students if they read wide, they will be able to write wisely. She also highlights the wisdom and insights students can gain from reading. She believes that good study habits are a key part of student success.
Ms Nina Yao
Ms Nina Yao was born and raised in Guangzhou before moving to the United States, where she studied for 6 years before returning back to China. She graduated from California State University of Fresno with a Bachelor of Liberal Studies degree in 2012.
Ms Yao brings to the table many years of international education teaching experience before coming on board to YWIES Guangzhou. Some of her international experience includes being a mentor (as part of the Wayfinder Program) in one of California's largest school districts to kids with learning disabilities and emotional challenges."
Ms Grace Liang
After graduating from university, Ms Grace Liang worked in Guangdong Country Garden International School and Huaxi Country Garden International School, serving as Primary Years Programme Co-ordinator and Head of Year. She has more than 9 years of Mathematics and homeroom teaching experience with a unique view of education. As one of the first batch of core bilingual teachers in her former school, she has participated in the preparation of school-based Mathematics textbooks and she often carried out demonstration classes for others.
Ms Lisa Zhai
Ms Lisa Zhai graduated from a normal university in 2012 with a bachelor's degree in literature and a teacher certificate for secondary school.
Ms Zhai has been engaged in the education industry since she graduated and has nearly seven years of teaching experience. She taught bilingual mathematics and theme in an IB international school. In 2017, she joined YWIES Guangzhou, where her role includes teaching primary mathematics, theme, character development as well as being a Grade 2 form teacher.
Mr Julius Zhuo
Mr Julius Zhuo graduated from the Beijing Normal University. He has engaged in international education and has been researching and teaching primary Maths for many years. Currently, he is the form teacher of Grade 5 and teaches Maths in Grade 3-5. He believes in imposing strict requirements on students without losing flexibilities and adopting strict teaching without losing fun.
Ms Emily Li
Ms Emily Li graduated from Hunan Agricultural University in 2014, with a major in visual communication design, meanwhile, a senior teacher qualification and Grade 6 in College English Test. She then worked as an art teacher in a public primary school in Changsha. In 2015, she became part of YWIES Guangzhou as a specialist assistant and she is also responsible for some extra-curricular activities such as primary yoga, badminton and digital oil painting. With more than 4 years experiences related to education, she got the certificate for teachers of Chinese to speakers of other languages in 2017.
Ms Li is helpful and kind. She has strong learning ability and curiosity about new things. Furthermore, she is highly responsible and enjoys being with students. Additionally, she has lots of hobbies, such as reading, drawing, travelling and so on.
Ms Daisy Fu
Ms Daisy Fu graduated from Hunan Normal University in 2010 with a bachelor's degree in literature and a teaching certificate for secondary school. She further her studies in Jinan University and graduated in 2013 with a master's degree in education. During her study, she volunteered to teach overseas for one year. After graduating, she worked in an overseas international school for two years. In 2016, she came back to China to work as a bilingual maths teacher in an IB world school. Since 2018 she has become one of the primary maths teachers in YWIES Guangzhou.
Ms Nancy Zou
Ms Nancy Zou graduated from Xinghai Conservatory of Music, and she has worked as a violin teacher for over 10 years. She is one of the founding teachers at YWIES Guangzhou, and she has worked here for 6 years. Her educational philosophy consists of the effiective combination and apply of the Orff international teaching method and the Suzuki method. The curriculum she uses is rich and progresses from simple to complex to cultivate student interest in learning. She has successfully hosted 5 violin concerts and participated in the Seeds of Hope concert. These events have received numerous positive reviews.
Ms Zou is a young violinist and a member of both the Guangdong Province Violin Club Association and the Guangdong Province Violin Education Club. She is also a Special Exam Proctor and is honored to have received the ""Outstanding Violin Teacher"" and ""Outstanding Band Conductor"" awards. In 2017, she led the school orchestra to attend a string-band music competition and received the Guangdong Invitational Tournament Gold award.
Mr Jack Liu
Mr Jack Liu graduated from South China Normal University, majoring in badminton and basketball. He is currently working in YWIES Guangzhou as a PE teacher and an assistant to the school sports director. He has a great passion for sports and he treats teaching rigorously and creatively. He is deeply loved by students. Under his strict professional training, the junior high school men's basketball team has solid foundation and strong team cohesive. They won the Basketball Tournament in 2018-2019 season, and was the first place in the junior high school men's group.
Mr Alex Yan
Mr Alex Yan graduated from Beijing Sport University with a master’s degree in Theory of Sports Pedagogy and Training and a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. After graduation, he worked in Beijing Bayi School and Beijing Huijia Private School. He has many years of international education working experience, mainly working on teaching PE classes, guiding sports competition and creating PE curriculum. He mainly focuses on cultivating students’ physical fitness and developing their athletic abilities. In August 2019, Mr Yan joined YWIES Guangzhou as RHT PE Curriculum Co-ordinator. Starting from February 2021, Mr Yan becomes a PE teacher of YWIES Guangzhou.
